Defence procedure of doctoral school ENGSYS-632

To the attention of future doctors:

Following the publication of the decree of 26 August 2022 amending the decree of 26 May 2016 on doctoral training (draft consolidated version attached), one of the provisions introduced is the taking of an oath at the end of the defence (Article 19 bis) .

The practice of taking an oath, now enshrined in law, places a moral obligation on the doctor, who may invoke it to refuse to perform actions that conflict with the principles of scientific integrity. Its inclusion in the doctoral charter will emphasise the shared responsibility of the doctoral student, their supervisors and the host laboratories.

This new provision applies to doctoral students whose thesis defence will take place after 31 December 2022 and, more broadly, will apply to all students enrolled from 2022/2023 onwards.

More specifically and in practical terms, the oath will be mentioned in the minutes. The text of the oath has also been included in the note to the jury (appended to the defence documents).

What is it about?

This provision is included in Article 19bis of the decree on doctoral training (change introduced by the decree of 26 August 2022 amending the decree of 25 May 2016). The existence of the oath also entails a change to doctoral charters, which must now include it (Article 12 of the decree on doctoral training).
